Fascia is the soft tissue component of the connective tissue system and is literally everywhere in our bodies! It runs through and wraps around our organs, bones and muscles and forms ligaments and tendons. The important thing about fascia is that it’s all interconnected and the theory is that tension, microtearing, inflammation or adhesions in this system this may cause chronic pain or reduced mobility.
Treatments for chronic pain will involve the use of direct and indirect techniques to help release adhesions in the myofascia (specifically the fascia running through and around the muscles).
The benefits of Pregnancy massage are numerous. Massage can promote stress reduction and relaxation and aid in the relief of pregnancy related Musculo-skeletal strain and pain including back and pelvic pain, tarsal tunnel syndrome, carpal tunnel syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome, headaches and lower leg cramping.
The majority of the massage is undertaken in a ‘side lying’ position with plenty of bolstering for comfort and support.
Used in both relaxation and remedial treatments, these are smooth basalt stones which retain heat. Incorporating heat via the hot stones into a massage helps relieve muscle tension and pain and increase blood flow.
Myofascial techniques and therapeutic stretching have also been found to be much more effective if heat is applied beforehand. Many people who have had a massage with hot stones will tell you it feels amazing!
A trigger point is what we would commonly call a muscle ‘knot’ – a lump or bump in a muscle that is causing pain. These are actually areas of tightly contracted muscle and when pressure is applied they can be quite tender!
Sometimes the pain can be very close to the site of the trigger point but surprisingly, the pain sensation can also refer to other more distant areas of the body. Finding these trigger points involves communication between the client and therapist who then treats with short intervals of firm static pressure – usually 2 or 3 times within a session.
Soft Tissue Release is a technique where pressure is applied at different points along a muscle to create a ‘lock’. This alters the working length of the muscle when it is then passively stretched. This technique can really help tight and contracted muscles.
It’s very important that any muscles treated for myofascial restrictions and. trigger points are then passively stretched to restore them to their normal length. I will also use a mix of static stretching, PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) stretching and Active Isolated Stretching to effectively treat areas of chronic pain. Passive stretching involves me taking the muscles into a stretch – Active stretching involves your muscles doing the work themselves!
Our lifestyles, active pursuits and interests are often, unfortunately the cause of chronic and acute issues with the (soft) tissues, and these aren’t things we can easily change or want to give up doing! I will teach you how to stretch effectively, treat you own trigger points or suggest easy breathing and relaxation exercises to optimise both your musculoskeletal and emotional wellbeing between treatments.
The environment Sarah created was so relaxing, it was just what I needed.
After recently being pregnant and giving birth my lower back has been in so much discomfort. Sarah listened to this and gave me a treatment that was suited to what I had explained my needs where. After just one session I felt less pain in my hips and when holding my son I noticed the ache in my lower back was much less.
Lastly I cannot forget to mention the hot stones.. such a pleasant experience.
I am so thankful for this service and I look forward to seeing Sarah again soon.

I had approached Sarah as had been working and studying which created lots of tension and pain across my shoulders and back. She was able to discuss with me my perception on what had caused it, offered supportive self-management and then performed her magic! With a myofascial release and deep tissue massage my body felt revived! Thank you for your ongoing treatment and I look forward to the next one!

I do suffer from some shoulder ache / pain, mainly posture related and I thought a massage may ease out some of the knots. I have to say that Sarah didn't only ease out the knots she managed to drastically reduce anymore pain developing. She gave me lots of advice and some exercises to do at home to help stop my tension / pain build up again and I found that I was more aware of my posture.
One example that my shoulder pain / stiffness had reduced is that when driving to work I come up to a junction where I have to look right for traffic. Because of the bend in the road I can't just turn my head I have to turn my upper body to be able to view the road clearly and it's quite painful. I couldn't believe the morning when I noticed I could turn my head easily without stiffness or pain and without having to turn my upper body and could clearly see the road. I have really enjoyed the sessions and will be keeping up a regular maintenance session to keep me on track.
